the Current FE107E is the closest in terms of Bl factor and design and the curves look similar.
It depends!? too.I think there is even a Fostex wide ranger that is whizzerless.
the Flat 5 is an exciting yet never wearing driver, (the last, being all paper, slightly the best,) in a sphere IMO & ISK, which is a nice environment, I'll admit.
communicative, as well as merely expressive, clear, fast, Bass?
?// chuckle, extreme treble? wha' ?????.add a proper woofer, done right, and a supertweeter, that can do 9k up on its own, and yer in gear. Both are a LOT of bother, but not to an audiophile.

I have used both Fostex and Lowther drivers in ported enclosures (not necessarily BR) and found them to work very well. In my opinion the Lowther drivers are a significant cut above the Fostex models I have used. If you use one of the lower magnet strength Lowthers, I have DX2 and PM6A, and a BSC circuit the response is not at all lacking in the bass. If you use one of the higher magnet strength Lowthers, I have PM2C and DX3/4, they will require a series resistance and BSC to tame the high end. But in a reasonably sized and simple to build floor standing ported design, they perform extremely well. I believe that no matter what modern full range driver you use you will need the BSC circuit to achieve a balanced SPL response. I guess one could use a very high Qts driver and avoid the BSC circuit, but I think it would be very boomy.Martin

Another great full range driver for BR is the now discontinued Radio Shack 1354.Diatone - but it's expensive.
The Pioneer B20 works great in sealed and ported designs (but really needs a tweeter).
Tandbang makes some cool 3 and 4 inch drivers that cheap and good.
The Fostex 168s of course... as well as other Fostex drivers like the F200a, F120a, FX200 and the FX120.
Altec 604s, any of the older, large Tannoys... Of course, these may not fit your definition of single drivers ;-)

... it's no full-ranger :-)
I suspect the highs would be a little rolled off without that compression driver and horn.
http://melhuish.org/audio/DIYBX19.htmlor you can halve it for a 24 liter box and still have full, warm bass… just not quite as deep.

scroll down to the second picture.
I think you can still find the Fostex 168S at Madisound. They work great in ported boxes. Their Qts is .34 - .37 depending on which document you read.

I like the FE168Σ a lot; I've been looking all over the durn place for them. Josh is all out. Koji is all out. Only place I've seen them is an Italian DIY place with no English page, and they want €158 for them (about two hundred bucks, since Shrub has flushed the dollar down the terlet), and there will be customs, and there will be heavy shipping, and there will be the hazards of cross-cultural mail order.I think you're right, 'zilla; this is a really good driver. I just don't think we're going to get them so easily or cheaply any more. De Poinz hisself is willing to pay a premium price for a new or puff pair of these; any sellers out there?
Peace,
I have not spent alot of time comparing the newer E version but my blind piano tuner buddy has. He has them in a big set of double horns and he likes the old one too (has both). The newer E sigma has more air and bass slam and is a tad smoother. An electrostatic speed on top and in the mids. To my ears the new E is better all around. Though the older is way good at the warm rich and open thing. The new vs old is really moot. Yes they are different but in very very subtle ways. Technically the newer -E- is better overall. Personally I like the accordian surround and whizzer.TC
> > > I like the FE168Ó a lot; I've been looking all over the durn place for them.Me too! They sound so good.. nice and balanced with a hint of bloom in the bass... and sweet, clear slightly rolled highs... not to mention the lifelike... if a bit forward midrange... Lovely!
Maybe not the most accurate... but certainly colored in a beautiful way... everyone who hears them thinks they are amazing.

Thanks, though.
I've waxed effusive in my praise of these moderate-Q 8" dual cone FR's too many times already but I'll do it again :-)Warm, rich, lush, detailed, and extended enough at both ends to more than satisfy my tastes. Really nice with a SET amp.
DaveJ's FE207E BR is on top in the photo :-) The port's in the back.
Best of all, the drivers aren't terribly expensive (you could buy about 10 of 'em for what one of the AlNiCo Lowthers costs... and I personally like the sound of the Fostex better).
all the best,

If I remember correctly they are an Eminence Alpha 10 in an enclosure a bit larger than a Pi 1. John removed the dustcap on the woofer and mounted the tweeter coaxially. The only part in the crossover was an inductor on the woofer. The tweeter was run full range.
Okay. Did you get to hear them?

We had them running for a good part of the get together. Nice sounding with great dynamics. They sounded extemely good when the Van Halen discs were dragged out.
