Black or "racial" music was mostly banned on "white" US radio stations. BBC and other Euro outlets played 45's of all the great Chicago Bluesmen. But, no video. So, when Keith and Mick copied the riffs they COPIED the riffs. Voice and all.
Blues vocals are as much a part of the genre, as guitar playing. Beck & call was started in cotton fields of the South. Just vocals. Then, some guitar dudes picked up on the pattern.
Can you imagine ANY singer trying to sing the Blues without heart? You could have Jimi Hendrix + SRV + Peter Green + BB King playing guitar and it's going sound like poo-poo.
