I think the hey-day is now.

Sure, there were shops everywhere, but IMO the gear available today is not only as good if not better, but adjusted for inflation it's a lot less expensive, too.
I'm one of those guys with LP proclivities, and I can easily find albums that no local record store would ever have had in stock back in the day.
