Hifi shops were on every-other corner. What spelled the end of that era was the advent of the video recorder, (Beta, VHS). Before and since high(er)-end hifi equipment has been niche.I don't know what youngsters are buying these days -- I'm older that our OP. But I suspect in terms of entertainment media it's 4K TVs and sound bars, or portable equipment, mostly iPhones and Android devices. As mention, gaming gear is also very popular.
