Re: unfortunate you say? disgraceful you accuse?

Hi--

I'm not going to be disingenuous and say that I wasn't responding to your post, but my remarks were more basically directed at much of this very long thread. I think that there have been two primary issues at stake: one, the perceived quality of the ELAD; and two, alleged (or actual) chicanery at audioreview.com. These two issues overlap if false positive reviews are being posted concerning the ELAD (even here someone proposed I was Don Morrison in disguise)--though apparently this is happening all the time at audioreview, with both positive and negative reviews. Only way to ameliorate this would be with a strict registration/monitoring process. And they overlap if the masters of audioreview are in league with Morrison and removing critical opinions of the ELAD. This of course is a serious matter, in its own way parallel to a print audio magazine giving good reviews to the products of companies that spend lots of advertising money in their issues (in other words: bribery).

So perhaps audioreview.com readers are getting a wildly skewed impression of the ELAD (among others), for whatever reasons. In my no doubt overly idealistic view, the best service that AA could perform would be to separate the 2 issues out, outright fraud and/or hyperbolic stupidity at audioreview.com, and the quality of the component in question. I can't comment on the first, and only hope that the masters of audioreview think seriously about their trustworthiness. But it seems that AA members could direct attention to the virtues or shortcomings of the ELAD, which seems the best reponse to perceived improprieties at audioreview.

I don't doubt your knowledge of the actual parts costs of the ELAD, but I believe that much in the way of electronic equipment is sold at prices far in excess of the costs of parts and labor. That's the way of capitalism. This is one of the strong arguments in favor of DIY--amps, speakers, cabling, whatever. But the ELAD is not a 10000 dollar component, and at 600 dollars, represents a very moderately priced deal, assuming of course, that it's not an entirely mediocre or worse preamp. And that's why I'm disturbed about the lack of attention in this long thread to the qualities of the elad, or deficiencies thereof, based on first-hand experience. And I don't find anything wrong with you or anybody pointing out the real costs of audio components--maybe one day I'll get miserable enough to learn how to use a soldering iron, how to build speaker cabinets, and how to read circuit diagrams.

Best,

Robert
