Here's why

Hi-

I made that comment, off the cuff, because it seemed to me that a person who shopped there would, as you say, already have a hobby they are passionate about, and which eats up a certain amount of time and money. That's all. It sure wasn't snobbery, and it sure wasn't a sense that __no__ fisherpeople at all would be potential audiophiles, just that they are no more likely to be interested than any other random group of people.

The contra case I have been trying to make, with limited success, is that it is easy to locate groups of people who specifically already made time and space and committment for music in their lives, but the high end does not reach out to them for whatever reason.

High end dealers sometimes entertain the local audio society. OK. I'd be shocked it it ever paid off, as audio club members (pardon me) think that they know it all, and often pride themselves on never paying retail.

How about having a reception at the American Guild of Organists Convention? There are all sorts of musical gatherings--Boston Early Music. etc.

JA makes the point about high end audio dealers being fishermen rather than farmers--i.e., they don't bother to plant the seeds of future success. Let me go one further, high end audio dealers sometimes fish by walking into the Bass Pro Shops parking lot and casting a line, cause it's easy.

I believe that the "value proposition" of high-end audio will not make itself apparent, under current cultural conditions, to people whose sole qualification for the industry's being interested in them is that they have money, especially in comparison to the obvious value proposition of spending a like amount on a larger flat-panel TV. Going after potential customers simply because they are rich, is not viral marketing, it is Kamikaze marketing.

The value proposition of high end audio will make itself apparent, ONLY to people who have already made a commitment in their lives to make space and time for music.

That is where we should be planting the seeds.

And, not expecting results in 30 days.

Cordially,

JM
