Re: Hmmm

I'm not sure what either one of you are talking about -- a trade association, an industry promotion group, a standards-setting group, a cooperative advertising group . . just what?

But nevermind.

There are some people out there for whom listening to music with undivided attention is still considered a worthwhile activity. They go to concerts of all types, classical, rock, jazz, folk, country, whatever.

They are the market and the people who need to be sold on the value of even a modestly "high-end" audio system. To do that, they need to like the music that benefits from hi-end reproduction -- which, unfortunately, does not include alot of today's highly processed pop recordings, which demand only loundness capabiltiy. But, I am convinced, if they have a taste for practically any other kind of music, they will appreciate what a decent audio system does for it . . . and without the need of any "killer app" new hi-rez format.

There is the "decorating issue." The physical demands of sound reproduction demand moderately large reproducers, placed somewhat conspicuously in the room, Dr. Bose's efforts to solve this problem notwithstanding. Few people have sufficient space in their homes for a dedicated "audio" room; and, if they have a dedicated room, its going to be for video. So audio is going to have to co-exist with video.

In the "good ol' daze" of audio when audiophiles didn't obsess about things like imaging, many speakers were stuck on the floor in a corner (and some were designed for that placement) or shoved into a bookshelf. To be sure, the resulting sound was often inferior . . . as one would expect with an overstuffed arm chair between you and the tweeter of the left channel speaker.

I do think a cooperative advertising program among brick and mortar dealers in a metro area would be a good idea, as would a cooperative demonstration.

Lots of B&M retailers are below the amateur level when it comes to service, etc. so some sort of "code" that everyone subscribes to would be nice, too. So the customer could expect a consistent level of service. Too often the service veers unpredictably between total snobbery ("are you going to buy anything today?") and indifferent ignorance of the merchandise.

But the biggest need, in my opinion, is for high end audio to harmonize itself with HD video, like it or not.
