I am looking for some help in understanding which tube is the proper tube to use in the phase splitter/driver stage in my 299-B and my 399 receiver. Both units (299-B and 399) came with 6BL8/ECF80 tubes in them and seem to work O.K. However, all the info I have on both units indicate that they should have 6U8/ECF82's in them. But wait...the service bulletin from H.H. Scott for my 299-B lists the 6BL8/ECF80. The H.H. Scott Archive website shows that they should have 6U8's instead. The Sam's Fotofact folder for the 399 does not list the 6U8 but instead lists the 6BL8. The sub-script note in the Sam's says the 6BL8 is an alternate but does not list what the primary tube is. SO...which is the correct tube? Did H.H. Scott make different versions of the 299-B and 399 receiver? Is one tube better to use than the other? Any help would be greatly appreciated.
