Hi,
My 299B (all original tubes )came with 6BL8.The tube compliment decal on the bottom of the amp reflects this is as well,so "If it walks like a duck.....".I've owned several 299B's and never saw Any differences between them.
The 299A on the other hand, must have been a work in progress.Different transformers ,chassis layout, depending on the date of production. The final looks like a "B",but no above chassis cylindrical Ohmite resistors.Totally different caps underneath(Pyramid) different wiring layout.A late "A" model sounds the best to me of all EL84 Scott amps.Very balanced without the elevated upper mids of the 299B.But they all sound cool.
Best,
Pat Landrum
