He can't rent an apartment because his credit rating will not qualify him to do so, even though, he can write a check for the entire building complex.
Credit ratings are only for the banks, not the customers of the banks.
When I have bought new cars, the dealerships ALWAYS want to run credit checks. I ask the dealerships why they need to run credit checks for cash. I actually had 1 dealership turn down both a personal and a cashier's check.
