If there are other acoustic instruments or voices on the recording even if it's a single microphone recording, then I can tell you the polarity of the recording by listening to the non-drum parts on my non-inverting playback system. And therefore I can tell the position of the microphone relative to the front or back or top and bottom if you prefer of the drum by comparing it to the sound of drums where I know the position of the microphone.
