Home Radio Road

Which tuner to get and getting the most from it. Thank God, for the radio!

Dear Mitch - YOU need to know where the transmitter's masts, for yr desired stations, are

- when buying an antenna - IE 'MY relevant transmitter's positions'

otherwise you're not going to be able to know what is necessary. Ie do you NEED a directional antenna at all, do you NEED a rotator, the answers to which depend on this local knowledge.

IME&O sound quality on fm can only be maximised with a signal from a directional antenna? I don't lack for high field strengths where I am, but there a lot of biggish hills aka mountains. So I need a directional job, but no rotator.

IME Rega's tuners definitely need a big signal for full quieting and best sound. IIRC reviewers tend to note this too.

You see, someone had the really bad pinko-socialist-idea of putting all TV and FM stations on ONE tower!
;-)!

Because just as a stronger signal ought to lower noise

- a clean signal -

with few reflections in the path the signal travels to reach you - will also be inherently less noisy out of the radio, less broken-up / prone to break up on loud bits,

and be easier to decode into stable stereo.

Given that you did not mention any such info - on YRT'sPositions - I have to assume:

that you didn't think it was relevant to us in assisting you, OR

that you didn't know / haven't found out.

Which is just plain slack!

Did you search here?

Oh yes. Advice - IME & O, and even if your close to all the station's/t'ers you want to access - it is STILL best to use a small-ish directional antenna but only IF its directional pick-up pattern () can cover the necessary arc.

It will SOUND cleaner.

Two cheap/small directionals stacked, and spread a little to widen the pick-up arc, can do this even more easily.

Lastly, if you have a BIG rug in the listening room, or are willing to run white-insulated wire - along the ceiling - of the BIGGEST room, you could build two splayed Rhombics with LOTS of gain, directional to boot, and enough arc for most cities, for just pennies.

You've just been 'given the drum' / 'drummed up to speed' - on FM and antennas.

'Kay?!
