This is considered the last resort. The problem with RF amplifiers is that they amplify everything, noise and multipath as well as the signal.You haven't mentioned your reception situation or your location, whether you're trying to receive a very distant or weak station or whether you are in a crowded radio market.
The best solution in almost all situations is a large roof-mounted yagi antenna with a rotor. This gives you lots of gain as well as high rejection of multipath and interference.
Gain at the antenna gives you much better results than gain via an amplifier. Do this first, and only try an amplifier if all else has failed.
