How about a push-pull DHT amp, using 2A3 or 6B4G, or even 300b? You'll get the DHT sound, with the added power of push-pull. I think it sounds better than SET with more controlled bass, and gives the best of both worlds. The Seth amp on the Magnequest web site is a good example, or check out my posts about a modified Dynaco from the last few months. And there is also the Amity/Aurora by Lynn Olsen at Nutshellhifi.com, although this is big bucks even if you build it yourself. There are others out there too, but this seems to be less talked about than DHT SET or pentode push-pull.
For that matter, why not get a Dynaco "project" that you can upgrade. I started in all this with a rebuilt but stock one from ebay. There is very little left from what I bought, but you couldn't tell from looking at it as the chassis and trannies are still in place, even the orange drop caps were re-used on the upgraded driver board, though these aren't original anyway. The Dynaco ST-70s or MkIIIs are no longer throw-aways, but still cheap enough. Lots of power at 35 watts, or even 15w in triode mode.
Unfortunately for me, one of my 6B4G tubes is bad, and I'm back to standard EL34s in my ST-70. At least I can go both ways.
