Home Tube DIY Asylum

Do It Yourself (DIY) paradise for tube and SET project builders.

I have done the same,

128.231.88.3

I have no idea where Joel is coming from as the RC coupling is pretty wide range in the amps I have seen, and, at least by 1940, the bandwidths are in the 40-10kHz range, -3db (fram manufacture specs). I do and have owned some late 1930's late 1940's WE amps, most notably a 94C that I really like. I think by the very late 1930's the standard caps were in the 4 to 8uf, 600V range (at least that is my experience). These were either oils or paper. By 1940 you see electrolytics with higher capacitance. (I know that you see changes in the same amp around the 1940s where electros replace papers or oils). Anywho, I have built capacitor banks for these guys (after replacing any papers with oils and paralleling the oils with the bank) and have really been impressed with the sound. I should note that I also replaced the ceramic coupling caps with WE metalized paper and oils. I think it could be an issue of a more robust power supply without leakage (I hate those papers and have exploded one) and a cleaner sound more pronounced lower end which gives the impression of extended bandwidth.

Enjoy

Rodney
