...and as I quote you "Clearly audio design is a multi-faceted problem, of which technical theory is an important part. I don't believe that technical acumen corrupts art" I -basically- agree. I see the problem as many/most engineers don't factor art into the equation at all.
Not that this is fully their fault either; just look at the conventional cookie cutter schooling handed out in the first place (with little emphasis on OLD school events/history -leading- to where we are currently; thermionics anyone?), let alone the vast majority of employer "goals" after the fact (cheap, purdy, disposable).
My biggest issue is that mindset of "if you can't measure it" when in fact (as others have stated) WHAT are you measuring, is it in fact the most important parameter(s), and do we even have a measurement standard developed for "x".
You don't seem to be blinded by these things (true of other inspired engineers as well) regardless of want to have grounding in good theory and a degree of measured ability. Kudos!I too pursued my dream of making it in the music industry in my youth; I spent almost two years of young adulthood trying to hone and market my craft including moving to L.A. I soon realized that between my abilities, the industry "machine" and many other factors, that was unlikely to happen, and I moved on. And I -still- play, because I like it!
