The gain difference between plates is most likely due to DC offset trimming needed on the deflector plates. If you look at the old QST articles on beam deflection tubes, they always provide DC trims for the deflection plates. Another factor is to de-magnetize the tube, this problem often shows up as an ofset in the deflection. You may see the THD come down too. Of the many BD tubes I have tested, a moderate percentage benefitted from de-magnetizing. Some tubes just have bad alignment of the elements and you have to sort thru a bunch to find really good ones. Another factor that influences linearity is the DC common mode voltage on the deflectors. With the offset trim pots for the deflectors, you can adjust the common mode DC too. Probably why they never caught on in audio, way too hard to get them aligned. But DIYers should enjoy them.Don
