My recommendation would be to build something very simple. A preamp is a typical first project, since it is just a basic gain stage. It doesn't have to be fancy or even sound good.In the process of making it you will slowly discover how to make it. The important thing is to make all the parts and schematic decisions yourself.
Get some books such as the Morgan Jones book. I personally used Bruce Rozenblit's book, but there may be better ones. I also liked using TubeCAD, which allows you to adjust circuit parameters and shows you the difference in performance from each parameter change.
