The following quote is taken directly from the Cunningham C-46 data sheet (keep in mind that the 46 has two grids and is a 5 pin tube): "For class A operation of the 46, the grid adjacent to the plate is connected to the plate." No resistor is needed.
The 46 is a very interesting tube. It was specifically developed so that you could run it in both class A (as the driver tube) and class B (as the power output tube). Here's another quote taken from the data sheet: "The tube has been constructed for this dual service in order to reduce the number of tube types necessary in a receiver."
Hopefully it was obvious, but what I didn't mention in my original post is that 46s are very inexpensive compared to 45s. Even if a 46 is "only" just as good as a 45 in your amp, think of the cost savings over any of the expensive 45s. That's why I'm recommending anyone with a 45 amp give this a try.
