I had an opportunity to compare two 6sn7 circuits. One is the srpp circuit and the other is a variant of the Fi primer circuit. I have them both as seperate pre's and I used the same amps in both comparisons. One amp is a 26/300b and the other amp is a 27/45. All of the amps use a certain vintage transformer. Three different sets of speakers were also used.First let me say that I love the 6sn7 as a driver tube. I think it is fabulous what it does for the sound. It provides a great backbone for the sound. So I think both circuits are excellent to begin with.
In listening comparisons, the fi primer type of circuit is clearly superior to the srpp circuit. The differnce is incredible. The fi primer circuit can transform the amp to a much higher level.
The srpp sound is a little tighter and cleaner. The bass is a little tighter. The comparison is almost like the srpp is tighter fitting clothing and the fi primer is looser fitting clothing.
The srpp might have a little prettier face but what the fi primer does for the sound is remarkable. The bass is a little looser, almost more natural. The music is enhanced greatly. It enhances the sound of everything. It adds a great deal of dimensionality. It brings the music more towards the listener.
There are apparently many variants of the fi primer circuit. I don't know exactly what the difference is between this variant and the original and I don't know which is better. Both have similar qualities and both are much more like each other than they are to the srpp circuit.
The 6sn7 driver is just one ingredient in an amp. You can make an excellent amp with the srpp circuit, but a great amp is possible with the fi circuit.
