Re: PP Iron for SE - repost of a 1996 rec.audio.tubes by "Paul"....

the loop will be offset and center on the Bdc point rather than the (0,0) point, but after the AC signal is removed, will the remaining DC "bring" the core back to the origin which is the Bdc point?

I don't see that it would. The residual magnetization wouldn't end up at the same x,y point as it would be without the offset, but it would end up at the same point on the loop.

this is a different situation than with no DC, since there is no "force" to bring the start point back to the origin hence the issue with remenance.

But the magnetization will be determined by the sum of the DC offset current plus the signal current. And just as there isn't energy to bring it back to 0,0 when there is no DC offset, neither is there sufficient energy to bring it back to Bdc when there is a DC offset.

However I don't believe it would really matter even if it did. Let's say it does go back to Bdc whenever the signal is removed. Once the signal gets going again and you get past the initial magnetization, you're right back in the same loop as always.

did that make sense? its the clearest way i can put it at this point.

Yes, I see what you're saying. I just don't see that it would behave with the offset fundamentally any differently than without it. The whole curve gets offset.
