No Vic, the $1,200 budget is not canadian dollars. I converted them to USD for your ease of calculation.I am not saying 6SN7 would be the best fit front end tube for the 300B tubes - only because I have quite a few pairs of different brands off hand. And I can roll them in to change the tonal signature of the amp.
I do not agree that some said 6SN7 can not give the 300Bs enough drive. In my system (PSE driving Matrix802S2) it showed lots of kicks, transient and headrooms. The sound stage is wide and deep. Images are pinpoint sharp with bodies. Loud passages of orchestral music still played with ease - haven't found no trace of clipping.
At least 3 amp manufacturers use the same circuit topology - Sun Audio SV300B, Golden Tube SE300B and Audio Note Conquest. It means something here with the 6SN7. Probably my next experiment would be to use a 6SJ7 as I do not need to do too much modifications to the existing chasis - but then I would lose a lot of fun doing 6SN7 rollings.
