A Possible Answer?

Hello Andy19191,

I appreciate your candor in this post. After reading your statement: "I have several times playfully wound up several of the more robust "subjectivists" without a real intention to prod for information. But when does playful become teasing and then bullying?"

I think I might have a possible answer that you can take or reject as you see fit. I may have been one of those "subjectivists" whom you playfully wound up, as you put it. In regards to your question "...When does playful become teasing and then bullying?" I'd like to respond that playful becomes teasing and then bullying when the recipient of that "playful" action feels like it's teasing and bullying.

I know Pat D disagrees with that assessment and feels some people are too sensitive. But I ask who are we to determine where another person's level of sensitivity should reside? Consider African-Americans and the N-word. Most educated people would agree it's not right to address them with this word. Even though they routinely use that word amongst themselves we still agree other non African-Americans shouldn't use that word. Why? Because we understand what many of these people and their ancestors went through and why it's offensive to them.

The problem when addressing people in forums on the internet is we have no idea of what they've gone through in their lives. Were they sexually, physically or mentally abused as children, who knows? Seeing as there is no way we can know, we need to be sensitive enough to accept someones word when they say your "playful" actions are received as being teasing and bullying to them. We cannot dictate where another person's level of sensitivity should reside when we have no understanding of what life has dealt them. Maybe I'm wrong but that's how I see it.
