A good DAC or amp

A good DAC - one that is pretty much immune to distortion from a reasonably accurate digital signal coming in (aka. transport and cable). Several in the market today that rebuffer, reclock, etc. and do a great job of rejecting jitter. The rest is just decent parts and a good warranty. Shouldn't cot over a $1K today and trending down.

A good amp - this is more tricky, but I would say one that delivers power much better than rated, with very low distortion. It's easier to give an example: the Parasound JC-1. When compared to the sins of speakers, recordings and rooms, there's a dozen or more amplifiers that perform just fine in these camps for the purpose of listening to music. You could spend up to $10K if you need lots of power, but why more.
