I like your approach and attempt to rationally look at the issues without resorting to vague rhetoric! Let's hope any further comments will follow suit and not get swamped by opinions.....In regards to your comment about magnetism, I do believe the motors, and in particular, the spin motor is a major source of jitter. For one, it is a DC motor and every time the pole pieces go over the magnets there has to be a a relatively large EMF pulse. While the motor can be shielded from the rest of the circuit, it is in very close proximity to the laser head and the direct digital extraction circuit. I do believe that demagnetizing the disc has aa effect because of the spin motor, which insidiously has a varying speed, as we all know.
I have absolutely no instrumentation which can measure this, but following this thought process, I have placed ferrous objects on top of the spin motor area to see if I could hear any difference. Years ago I had the VPI Magic Bricks, a nice wooden box with pieces of laminated steel inside of them ( I dropped one and the box split open, that's how I know, thankfully not on my foot!). I could hear a difference but I wasn't happy with what I heard.
It struck me that that the magnetic field generated from the motor would be a toroidal shape and I then placed large steel washers over the spin motor (actually on the chassis top as most plastic mechanisms wpouldn't support the weight). The sound of the player improved immediately: more inner detail, and a sense of ease (dreaded subjectivism here). Experimenting with large toroids and then further expanding the experimentation by adding a layer of copper foil and then grounding it further increased the sonic improvements.
I also wrapped layers of Mu metal foil around the spin motor with very good results.
As usual YMMV....but I thought you may find this food for thought.
