What are you talking about? 16bit? Who is discussing 16bit? I guess that's the wrong thread. I am a bit confused.
Just to comment your statements:
Any digital manipulation of DATA will cause losses. Period. It'll always be a compromise you're looking at or better you're listening to.
You might win on one side and you loose on the other side. That's about it.
BTW:
I am runinng a Sabre DAC, a tweaked MA Transit and a tweaked EMU 0404 USB they are all 24 bit.
And if we talk 16/44.1 - you might recall that still at least 98% of all music material is 16/44.1. And don't forget a well implemented 16/44.1 DAC can do an outstanding job and outperfom the majority of average 24bit DAC implementations.
