Home Computer Audio Asylum

Music servers and other computer based digital audio technologies.

I thnk I'm almost there...

I had a false start, but I think I may have a two-part solution.

I found out that the latest dBpoweramp has an ALAC encoder. It will rip straight to ALAC on your hard drive. It seems easy enough to use and I like the fact that it looks at three different tagging databases as well as has the "accurate rip" that checks against other users' results (the *only* way to know that you truly have 100% perfect data). They want something like $5 or $10 a year to maintain access to these services, but it seems like it's probably worth it.

So one part of the equation is presumably solved. Then I found a program called Anapod that will transfer files to and from the iPod. I thought I was done until I realized that while my son had a music player (his iPod), that I didn't have one on my computer!

It turns out that J.River will play ALAC as long as you have QuickTime installed. So that is my backup option. But right now I am looking at Foobar (or trying to, anyway). It has a plug-in that allows for ALAC playback, and another plug-in that allows for iPod management. If the iPod manager is a sensible one, then I'll be done.

The only problem is that Foobar won't even load on my W2K computer. It just gives an error message saying that it requires XP, which is kind of silly as the only real differences between the two OS's are the added spyware and the different cosmetics on the UI. But I will soon be switching to a new laptop that has XP. (Normally I would delete XP and install W2K instead, but now it appears that Microsoft is bribing the hardware vendors, as the network card will not work on W2K.)

So when I have put out some of the fires at the office, I'll switch to the new computer and try Foobar. I was really hoping to try all the computer audio apps on the old computer. That way as the registry gets clogged up with extra information I could just install the winner of the software runoff contest on the new computer and keep things clean. But such is computing...
