You make some valid points and you're right about nothing lasting forever. Not even commercial software. However, there are challenges associated with maintaining legacy systems, such as the time-consuming and overwhelming process of migrating from an outdated version of PERL to even the latest PERL let alone modern programming languages. The LMS team were asked long ago if they will be porting to the latest PERL and the answer was basically that it was way too much work. As such, other platforms that have been updated [like Synology NAS DSM] will no longer natively support LMS.
So long as there's an LMS team around I'm sure they will do their best to keep it alive. I wonder how many developers actually contribute to supporting LMS and how old are they? If there's just a couple old guys doing 90% of the work you have to wonder how long that will last. We may both be dead by then too so maybe it doesn't matter.
