You're close. Very close. The bell is a resonator a lot like any of the other audiophile resonators - tiny little bowl acoustic resonators made of gold or silver, Tibetan temple bowls, Tibetan temple bells, tiny ceramic bowls, crystals in general, Synergistic Research resonators of various types, Mpingo discs from Shun Mook and others. The method of operation varies from sympathetic vibration to pressure zone equalization to RF dissipation (the diameter of the tiny bowl is not only an acoustic wavelength but also an electromagnetic wavelength. In order to improve the sound rather than degrade it resonators must be carefully placed in the room, a lot like Helmholtz resonators or Tube Traps.
