Re: Whats the audio news from Oswald's Mill -2004

Hi Jeff,

Just back in from the trip. Just love being bent over backwards with no grease by Continental Airlines on both journeys, especially being repeatedly herded into the airplane only to sit on the side of the runway for extended periods before takeoff. At least sardines get oil...

Splendid event, my third trip to the Mill. Auditioning all the gear took most of two days this time, and the listening, rabid audiogeek conversations and Jonathan's gourmet meals provided almost too much sensory input to process. It is hard to return to real life after such an experience.

Everyone seemed to sense the missing presence of Mr. A.J. May, who died in the past year. A.J. spent his life designing and testing a long list of stellar RCA speaker products, some of which were there this year to amaze us. Hans brought a pair of ultra rare RCA LC-9A two way horn speakers, complete with all original components. This model was RCA's answer to the Altec A7, and I thought they sounded terrific. Tom Ruppert was kind enough to bring some 1930s and 1940s RCA 8" field coil cone speakers, and they sounded beautiful, especially the driver from Harry Olson's rear loaded fullrange MI-4400 booth monitor- this one had the dual voice coil design and was astonishing in its clarity and naturalness. The Olson designed MI-6234 5" free edge cone fullranges playing in the kitchen courtesy of Doug Eisemann were a treat as well.

Everything sounded good this year in fact, the best overall sound at the Tasting by far. Jonathan's system was greatly improved due to newly enclosed Ubangie bass cabinets and incorporation of Bill Woods' aluminum conical horns. Jonathan is now running three MI-1428Bs per side- gadzooks!
