Hi Jeff,Curiosity got the best of me, so I grabbed a yardstick and measured an RCA 12 cell horn stored in my spare room. These have the same cell size as the RCA 18 cell, just fewer of them. I measure 35 inches from single driver throat adapter to front, so the dimensions are comparable to the Altecs.
The size similarity may have a historical origin. RCA engineers collaborated on the Shearer Horn System project, from which the Lansing and later Altec product line evolved. Drivers for many of the first RCA Shearer type systems were produced by Lansing, and I suspect that some of their multicellular horns were as well.
The earliest RCA multicellulars were encased, but were filled with horsehair or something similar. These were heavy*, but not like the tar filled units. After two or three years, RCA built non filled horns; the cells were made from thick cardboard with metal sleeves along the cell edges. These were produced until the RCA radial horn systems debuted about 1950.
*I know- I helped Jonathan lug one of his up a flight of stairs.
