-I wasn't trying to insult you. I was calling both of us knuckleheads, because compared to the guys who wrote those articles, that is exactly what we are--a couple of knuckleheads.Cool, I can live with that.
I'm certainly familiar with Leach and Linkwitz. I've heard of Vanderkooy and Lipshitz but I'm not familiar with Fink or Hellerich. I'm sure they all had important things to say about crossover design, but what we are debating here is far simpler.
You assertion that 2 drivers with 12db slopes are 180 degrees out of phase is trivially true. When using 12db slopes you simply wire the woofer out of phase with the tweeter. This is explained in Wayne’s paper. Wayne admits it; even the most basic radio-shack books admit it. Why do you keep criticizing Wane for wiring these drives in phase when he clearly doesn't recommend it? I think you need to re-read is paper.
There may be some designs that I'm unaware of but as far as I know, none of the Pi speakers use 12db/12db slopes. Your whole argument seems to be based on a misunderstanding and an overgeneralization.
As far as offset baffles go. I've sold high-end audio for many years. If heard many excellent examples of speakers with and without staggered baffles. I have never heard a unique quality to staggered baffles that would lead me to conclude that the technology is inherently superior. I do believe that it does work in combination with other factors (6db crossovers and extreme diffraction control) to make a good speaker, but I don't feel it is the only road to Rome.
