Kalman Rubinson who is a senior editor at Stereophile said the Bel Canto evo 200.2 could not breakthrough to the high-end market due to its opaque/non-transparent high frequency's that particular Bel Canto used tri path class D if I remember correctly. He then said the Bel Canto ref 1000m that used B&O ICE power modules suffered from dullness in the upper mid-range and treble. Kalman Rubinson along with other reviewers and audiophiles were very skeptical of class D at that time and for good reason. Most agreed class D would no time soon be better than the best class a or class a/b most people thought class D was at least a decade or more away from competing with the current standards.
Then in 2016 the class D explosion happened NAD debuted the master series M22 and the Theta's Prometheus mono blocks and Bel Canto ref600 debuted all these amps used the Hypex Ncore modules. Then in 2019 the self-clocking Purifi Eigentakt power modules came out further improving class D and class D is still evolving. And in 2024 the Purifi 1ET9040BA module was released this module was measured by the worlds most advanced audio analyzing equipment the APX555B audio analyzer. And the high linearity and ultra-low distortion of the Purifi module made it difficult for the worlds most advanced audio analyzer to measure.
There is still a lot of hate in forums against class D I do not know why but if I had to guess I think the people that say they hate class D have never heard good class D amplification.
When I talk to most audiophiles, they laugh at me when I tell them PCM pulse code modulation was invented in 1938 or that PWM pulse width modulation was invented in 1955 they think I am crazy!! The first output transistor was invented in 1947 18 years later in 1965 Acoustech released the first solid state amp using output transistors instead of tubes. Makes me wonder what technologies in the recording and reproduction of sound are waiting to make their debut.
And Purifi sells DIY kits that are a game changer in today's throw away society. And I love the fact Purifi sell kits due to the fact the high-end audio industry was based off DIY and would not exist as we know it without DIY.
In the late 40's early fifties high-end audio amplification came out McIntosh, Harman Kardon, Marantz the big three all sold kits McIntosh only sold one kit for one year. But the early beginnings of audio were all about DIY. And today DIY is still going strong thanks to people like Nelson Pass who has his amp camp once a year and his speaker camp that are dedicated to DIY and thanks to people like the founders of Purifi. Bruno Putzeys, Lars Risbo, Peter Lyngdorf who know the importance of DIY to their industry.
If you told most audiophiles that they could buy the world's best measuring amplifier in a kit and build it themselves, they would not believe it. Thanks to the knowledgeable founders of Purify its true.
And the founders of Purify are still working on improving class D which begs the question how can class D get any better it's already destroyed class A, class A/B to the point of no return.
And I do still own non class D and non-digital sources. I still own my first pieces of audiophile gear. A Sansui 9090 Altec 604's Dual 1229 turntable and Nakamichi dragon cassette player all bought from a yard sale in 1984 when I was 13, I paid $125.00 for everything with money I earned from mowing lawns and collecting and turning in glass bottles for their 10-cent deposit. I bought the gear from a widow she did not know the value neither did I not until I was older.
One day I am going to dig out my old system and set it up call some childhood friends over drink beer and spin some vinyl like the good ole days.
Tube class A & A/B will always have a home for someone more for nostalgia than actual listening.
