Yup Tom, IMHO if you want real bass it will require serious cone area. If you want a reasonable size it might be best to use a bass reflex. The open baffle purist might not approve but it works for me. I basically have a 3-way with a paper cone mid, compression driver/horn, and a bass reflex. I do plan to try open baffle bass sometime soon but I doubt I will be satisfied unless I am willing to have a huge baffle and at least a pair of 15"s per side.
Duke was giving good advice. They do need to be placed well out in the room. I'd say 5 feet minimum. A bass trap behind them can help. You are free to experiment of course but I haven't found it helpful to try and get bass boost from the rear wave in the same way that getting it from floor bounce helps.
