heya tom-yeah-- this particular setup just had enough harshness in the mids to be noticeable at higher volume- mebbe that's the clack you're talking about. even shifting the knee of the horn's crossover several times- i still couldn't beat it-- and i pushed it from about 1000hz all the way up to 2k-- same issue, just never went away. it got better-- but i figure it's probably because the driver was happier not going so low.
i dunno why- mebbe i'm sensitive to it, or mebbe i'm just nuts-- but i end up hearing crossover distortion a LOT.. even in commercial speaks- which makes me and everybody else nuts. i used to have spendor 1/2's, and i SWEAR i always heard the same distortion at around 1-2k.. i'm beginning to think my EARS distort there. even had to check my gear. but switching speaks-- it went away. then i started making this particular batch of speaks.. came back! 'course.. i made the damn crossovers and it's my first go at it.. which is a big part of the problem!
wish i knew WHAT exactly caused it-- mebbe i could have it taken outa my ears... or maybe it's just playing music for a long time, it's the opposite of the old conrad-johnson adage 'it just sounds WRONG.' i just wish i knew what IT was!
that said-- the 1st/2nd order mix ain't doing so bad-- i still have to mess with that 'null' arrangement when i have a minute to not be pulling plaster off of framing in my kitchen.. but i have faith!
thanks for the corroboration! happy new years-
d.
