With all the versions of the 8th out there I was quite surprised that the San Francisco Symphony playbill recommended the Solti as one of two recorded performances to listen to. I found the Solti performance to have a severe case of ADD, with almost a loss of composure at times. And technically (I'm talking about the LP-I have not heard the CD), especially in the loudest passages, and especially in the First Part, the Solti is a failure. The last 4 or 5 minutes of the first side of the LP seemed that my system was seriously mistracking (and perhaps it was). The soloist though were *very* good in my opinion. But I knew when I put the Solti back on the shelf I would probably never pull it back out again. (It had been probably 25 years since I last listened to it---and now I more fully understand why).
Interestingly, the other recommendation in the Symphony playbill is the Wit conducting the Warsaw National Philharmonic Orchestra on Naxos the one that Barry mentioned.
The other version I "prepped" on for the concert was Telarc's Shaw/Atlanta. Technically, it is *light years* beyond Solti. The recording is quite good indeed. The soloists don't measure up to Solti but it is so much more "listenable" and has tremendous "weight" and impact. I got so much more out of it than the Solti.
A year ago or so, based on your recommendation :) I also purchased the Haitink on Pentatone (I think). But I never played it (along with about 2 dozen other SACDs [and some old LPs too!] that I have not yet opened) and could not find it to prepare for the SF concert. Curiously, you did not mention it this time around.
I do believe that the most cutting edge technology (multi-channel) is essential to extract the most out a performance of the 8th, especially. The Sunday performance reconfirmed that for me in no uncertain terms. It looks like it will be a year before the SF performance is released and I don't want to wait that long so I will probably spring for the Nagano on SACD that a lot of listeners seem to like. I am influenced also since I have seen him conduct on a couple occasions. Are you familiar with that performance? It is divided on 2 SACDs but that should be OK if Part One is on one disc and the entire Part 2 is on the other. It is noticeably longer than the SF performance which I forgot to time exactly, but I think came in about 80 minutes net (but I'm not sure). There was a clear "pause" between the first and second parts to allow (and encourage) throat clearing and the orchestra warmed up a bit too!
