With these MTT San Francisco Symphony Mahler multi-channel recordings, it's almost like sitting amongst a very quiet audience on listening. These are recordings where sonic clarity, with just the right feeling of ambience, balance with truly excellent rendition and musical performance. On Pentatone, for instance, the Alan Civil Mozart 4 Horn Concertos + Rondo is just excellent (of course, for horn performance, Brain's is still the standard (('50s mono)). This Pentatone recording is the first I've heard where the orchestra is as cleanly represented as is the horn.
On AIX Records, the George Enescu Philharmonic Orchestra series represents DVD-A that more than holds its own against SACD. These 96/24 recordings are marked by their clarity. Representative is Stravinsky's Firebird Suite (1919 version). Ravel's Bolero is also on that disc (again, clarity of instrumentation stands out).
.. Just my opinions ..
