Already a provision on professional recording equipment and it moves the out-of-band HF noise far enough away from the baseband to give LPCM a real threat. The SACD medium was/is a series of compromises to get multichannel audio onto a disc in a secure format. From the tech papers presented by Philips engineers on SACD we know that it was argued that the SACD system is the most efficient carrier for multichannel lossless data for the 20-20K bandwidth within the DVD standard. The increased capacity of blue-ray allows for the use of 5.6Mhz DSD without concern for capacity limitations, and AFAIK a 2X bandwidth DSD signal is backward compatible with existing hardware as you just need to clock the data and LPF. That combined with encrypted HD video is about the best that we can expect from a multinational holder of significant copyright in film and music. This aint about open source folks.
