For what it's worth, I recently put Lundahl transformers on the DAC outputs of my Pioneer 563a. A few days ago I decided to try it with my sophisticated passive preamp ($3 Rat Shack stereo pot and RCA connectors stuffed into a plastic case). Wow! I'm sleep deprived since Thursday because I can't pull myself away from the music this combo is making. My volume range is from 75% to 100% of the pot but it's enough. Yes, it lacks some dynamics and it's a bit thin in the midbass, but everything else about the sound is pretty damn seductive.
