I didn't like the Nautilus.

Here's the story. First day, I auditioned 804, it was a disaster. Went to the dealer at lunch time. The idiot salesman didn't never heard of imaging. He was kind enough to leave me alone in the listening room. I tried re-positioning the speakers with the help of another guy who came to audition for half and hour, couldn't get any imaging what-so-ever. We decided to give it a listen as it is. We both liked what we heard. They had 803's and 801's in the store. 803's were hooked up to a HT setup. Sales guy was scared to move them. So we listened to 803s on HT gear somemore and left.

Next we I went back and listened to 803s. Yes, I DID like 803s, OTOH, I also liked VA Mozarts and Beethovens.

During the 4 months I took auditioning different gear, my priorities have shifted from seeking out "best" sounding speakers to tube friendly, highly detailed speakers which excel in soundstaging and neutral sounding. Goal was to let the electronics determine what I hear. Fortunately, Sonatinas offered me everything I was looking for at way below my budget. Biggest problem with sonatinas is they are brutal in revealing upstream deficiencies, and they do sound thin in midrange with ss electronics. No wonder, so many people of dumping them on audiogon. I bet these people would be very happy with colored speakers like VA or splendor. In my system, sonatinas are georgeous.

>>bright? i thought you said "sweet". which is it. they are unforgiving. . .

YOu answered it yourself.

With some sources/electronics they do get bright and fatiguing, it happened to me. Could be the artifacts of aluminum dome. Yes, Nautilus tweeter is tuned sweet.
