Re: Real life

"However, I am talking about music that has real dynamic range, ie. classical. Then you most certainly do need a speaker with good dynamic range (particularly downward in level). "

Forget the speaker, the major barrier to high dynamic range is the domestic listening environment, Dynamic compression is applied to large orchestral pieces not just for the sake of the speakers & recording equipment but for your listening pleasure and for the sake of your ears. A piece middling at 65dB with peaks of >100dB will be a frustrating listening experience in most domestic listening environments even if the speakers were capable of reproducing the program without any strain, i.e. from too soft to too loud, hence the judicious use of dynamic compression on large orchestral pieces, IOW it is a practical limitation, the concert hall and the domestic listening environments have totally different acoustic properties.
