Hi Dave,
Oh boy! I guess this means you want the TJ's back! Damn! With the added transformers the difference between the Valve Arts and the TJ's is much more apparent. Not just like differences in, say, 12au7's in the Foreplay. More like an entirely different amplifier. There is a certain laid back musicality to the V.Arts and I can listen to them with no fatigue for hours but the TJ's open up the music and really separate the sounds and open them up for inspection. In a way they make the music more(I hate to use the old Stereopile terms) "etched" or "ruthlessly revealing"- though not in a bad way. There are times when I find myself listening to the seperate parts of the music where with the Valve Arts I tend more to listen to the whole since the parts are more blended. The audiophile in me prefers the TJ's by a wide margin but the Valve Arts do the music quite well! The biggest thing I notice when I pull out the VA's and pop in the TJ's is the lack of a big cloud of upper bass-lower midrange warmth that the VA's have. It seems strange that the 2a3's would have this and the 300b's don't. I always thought that 300b's were supposed to have this warmth and the 2a3's were more clear and dry!? I assume this cloud is just harmonic distorton and should be banned from the listening room. So, I think a pair of TJ's is on my wish list.
Let's get together and compare amps again soon!G.
