Re: Paramours w/76

63.116.139.54

It was raining and I had some 76s, but no UX5 sockets so...

I soldered magnet wire directly to the pins of a pair of 76s, insulated with teflon and shrink and did the following:

1. Moved filament (heater) connection from 4-5 to 5 on the 76s.
2. Moved filament (heater) connection from 9 to 1 on the 76s.
3. Moved plate (anode) connection from 6 to 2 on the 76s.
4. Moved control grid connection from 7 to 3 on the 76s.
5. Moved cathode connection from 8 to 4 on the 76s.
6. Changed 499 Ohm cathode loading resistor (was @ B8,NOW @ B4) resistor to 1 1680 Ohm resistor (combo of a few carbon comps I had on hand).

Measured voltages after change:
B4 cathode = –350MVDC (was B8 on 12AT7)
B2 plate = 177VDC (was B6 on 12AT7)
Top of C4S = 261VDC

The tubes look really cool, like rockets taking off. Sounds sweet and
relaxed, almost limpid. Pacing is much improved, bass has a nice bloom. I mostly listen to reggae, blues and jazz so pacing and natural voice are important to me. I always look for natural voice and pretty much don't worry about the rest. John Lee Hooker can seriously scare you now ('I'm Bad Like Jessie James' from 'Live at the Cafe au Go-Go') I'm using Fostex 208 Sigmas in totally wrong bass reflex boxes (re-used Fulton 80 cabs with one of the tweeter holes left open) for speakers. These "speakers" never ever sounded good with anything, I just never got around to building proper cabinets. Now they are just about perfect for these amps. OPT is cobalt EXO-36, plate choke is BCP-15 with the old choke used as a filter(?) choke, output tubes are just about worn out Sylvania 2A3s. I'm sure something is about to blow up, but it sounds SO good.
