Iron is the biggest improvement, for sure.The driver tube choice is limited to those that draw no more than 300mA of filament current. That lets out a lot of good stuff, but there are some single triodes of interest. (This was not practical until the C4S upgrade came out.) Most are either octal or 7-pin, so they will need new sockets and perhaps a different hole size. Look for a plate resistance of 5k to 10k, and a gain (mu) of 20 or more. If you have a high-output preamp, a 76 (mu=13) might work out. Otherwise, the reference would be a 6J5 type - boring but hard to beat.
