Hello Xavier,
The Quickie uses the 3S4 directly heated pentode. (Also known as the DL-92). For the batteries, I would be careful about the rechargeable batteries, as they tend to have lower output voltage than their Alkaline counterparts (1.2V vs 1.5V on the D-cell).
The headphone output is provided by a very familiar output transformer ;)
Fets are another option, but they will eat up the battery current in a hurry.
