My answer to your question is no I haven't tried them with classical or big band jazz.I think this amp can not be compared to SET because they cover a much broader frequency range than similarly powered SET amps out there and the power output is much higher too. I have compared this amp with a 50w Golden Tube Audio SI50 (push-pull) and it plays much louder. Using the same source and more efficient speakers (BG Radia X3 93 db), the Golden Tube Audio needs the volume set at approximately 12 o'clock to get the approximate sound level of this amp using my speaker with lesser sensitity (Paradox 3 90.5 db) with the volume at about 10 o'clock. I have also compared this amp with a Conrad Johnson MF2100 100w and Classe CAV150 solid state amp and this sound louder than those too. I think power rating varies from manufacturer to manufacturer, the best judge are your ears.
I've listened to Babatunde Olatunji's Love Drum Talk album and Patricia Barber's "Black Magic Woman" on the solid state amp I mentioned above and this amp. This amp can handle those peaks easily while the solid state began to clip at the dynamic peaks.
One thing to consider though is this amp was able to drive a speaker with 9 6-inch drivers and 8 ribbon tweeters.
