Accuphase, Luxman and Onkyo. I didn't know all that history but it sure says something about Kenwood!
The phono stage of the 700C has gobs of gain but I don't believe they use JFETs. On one unit the phono stage would easily go into oscillations!
On another unit it sounded fine but not great... Compare to my zero-feedback tubed design with excellent parts quality, the Kenwood's phono stage does not stand a chance...
It might be a decent phono stage for anyone using a standard receiver or a low-end preamp.
But all that is inconsequential...
That line stage is absolutely stunning!
You think it sounds good with the 700M, try it with a serious single-ended amp with some real guts... :-)
