I know the talk about the Panny is getting a bit old for people, but what the heck. I've heard the Odyssey and the ODL and both are pretty good sounding and good deals for the money. Regarding the warrantee, I have bought tons of stuff (and sold) on Audiogon. As far as I know, most of the used gear on Audiogon comes WITHOUT a warrantee. I'd be a bit sceptical about a five year old CD player or something with moving parts but these amps are pretty well made and will probably give you years of great service without any issues. Odyssey and (the now defunct ODL) are both solidly made amps that run cool (bipolar design) and have beautifully milled aluminum cases.I'd like to see how they would both stack up against some of these new inexpensive digital receivers like the Panasonic. You would need a preamp with the Odyssey/ODL because they are only amplifiers, however it would be fun to see how well they would do versus the Panasonic XR 45. I listened to the Panasonic (stock form) recently and it sounded very good. No lack of bass or harsh top end. The highs were very pleasing and the bass was strong and powerful. Not bad for under $300! From what I hear, a couple tweeks (power cord, maybe some better caps in the PS) and the Panasonic is taken to a higher level. For the price of that ODL (or the Odyssey) a decent preamp, IC's etc, you could get a Panasonic digital receiver and a Berenger (spelling?) digital crossover/EQ and go completely active! That would be an even more fun comparison. A guy on the Madisound board is reporting some promising results from such a setup.
Hmmmm...
