I have both a Slagle Autoformer AVC and the S&B Transformer Volume Control TVC. The AVC after a low mu tube stage as a preamp is pretty unbeatable. The TVC used correctly (respecting input voltage limits and impedance) sounds good. Using it as the attenuator to an amplifier with very short low capacitance wiring is very good.
It boils down to cost. Resistors and switches are cheap as well as carbon&plastic potentiometers compared to good magnetics.
