I won't take issue with some of the "quirkiness" that you have mentioned, but I have never experienced any transient pops or bangs from my MAP-1, ever.
In your third paragraph you state there is room for one set of six channel inputs. Apparently your unit differs from mine in this area as well. (See photo in link)

The "quirky interface" to which you refer is due in large part to the fact that this unit is not in any way, shape, or form a processor; it is a 6 channel analog preamplifier. It does what it does, and it does it exceptionally well.
